About Phala's Eating House

Phala's Eating House, also known as Phala's Kitchen, is a traditional South African eating house in Block S, Mabopane, north of Pretoria. We cook the dishes that South African families grow up on: pap with slow-cooked meats, mala mogodu, marapo, oxtail, eisbein, sheep's head and village chicken. Our motto is simple: African cuisine with a side of love.

What we cook

Everything on our menu is built around one idea: traditional food, cooked slowly and served generously. Tough, flavourful cuts like tripe, trotters, bones, tongue and oxtail need hours in the pot before they become tender, and we give them that time. Every plate comes with pap, the stiff maize porridge that is the backbone of a South African meal.

Want to know more about a dish before you order? Our Kitchen Stories blog explains what each one is, where it comes from and how it's cooked.

More than a place to eat

Phala's is a gathering place. Families come for Sunday lunch, friends come to relax over a plate and a cold drink, and we host soul sessions and special evenings for our community. Read more in Phala's Hang Out.
